MIAT Houston in
Transition

Houston Campus in Transition

In 2021, MIAT College of Technology joined forces with Universal Technical Institute (UTI) and shortly after, UTI began offering MIAT programs at its campuses nationwide. Together, the two schools prepare students for careers in the transportation, skilled trades and energy industries.

MIAT and UTI are two well-known technical education schools that work to provide industry-aligned programs that promote career readiness. Each school has built a favorable reputation in the industry, and once they linked arms, their strategy for serving students advanced.

As you may know, MIAT and UTI have campuses in Houston, TX, that are just a quarter mile from each other. Up until now, we’ve been enrolling students in both schools. To simplify things, MIAT Houston’s operations will merge with UTI-Houston and UTI will conduct a teach-out of MIAT’s Houston students in a phased approach. This exciting transition will enhance our support services to benefit students and graduates.

Why Is This Transition Taking Place?

UTI and MIAT Houston have already begun integrating their departments. Officially combining the campuses will enhance collaboration so students can benefit from the larger support services team UTI has developed over the years.

But don’t worry, the things that inspired you to choose MIAT won’t change.

Here’s What’s Not Changing…

The things that make MIAT so great will remain. This includes:

  • The current Houston campus location
  • Hands-on instruction in labs with tools, technology and equipment used in the field
  • Passionate and experienced instructors
  • Courses with industry-aligned learning objectives

So, What is Changing?

Current and future students will gain access to UTI’s dedicated support services teams, including career, financial aid, housing assistance and military and veteran services.

Other small changes will occur, as well. For instance, some training programs will be shorter, allowing students to graduate faster. This may vary for the students involved in the transition, but long-term, we can expect the following:

  • Industrial Maintenance Technician will decrease from 9 to 7 months
  • Airframe & Powerplant Technician will decrease from 20 to 18 months
  • Advanced Non-destructive Testing will decrease from 9 to 8 months

MIAT’s course schedule will also shift to mirror the one at UTI, with courses lasting for three weeks and taught Monday through Friday, five hours per day. To offer flexibility, students will have two daily sessions to choose from. For more information about how this transition may affect you, check out the FAQs below.

What’s the Timeline?

The MIAT brand in Houston will gradually transition to UTI over 12 months. We will begin communication on December 4, 2023 and will have two teach-out phases:

  • Phase 1: On May 13, 2024, industrial maintenance, robotics and automation, wind power and HVACR will transition to UTI programs.
  • Phase 2: On October 28, 2024, airframe and powerplant and advanced non-destructive testing will transition to UTI programs.

Students who enroll in MIAT and do not graduate from their programs before the dates listed above will have the opportunity to transfer to UTI’s version of the same program. Upon successful completion of their program at UTI, they will receive UTI diplomas, despite their original enrollment with MIAT.

UTI’s brand name is well recognized and valued throughout the country, and we expect this change to support similar employment opportunities for our graduates.1

What Else Should I Know?

The transition will create a more convenient educational experience for students while providing them with larger access to services and dedicated staff members who can help them succeed.

Merging MIAT with UTI will also allow us to build stronger connections with employers and become a team even better equipped for technical training that emphasizes career readiness.

Most importantly, both Houston locations will continue providing students with the support they need to pursue their career goals.

FAQs

What’s the timeline?

The transition will happen over a 12-month period that begins December 4, 2023. The following phases will take place:

  • Industrial Maintenance, Robotics & Automation, Wind Power and HVACR will become UTI programs on May 13, 2024.

What won’t change?

The things that made you choose MIAT won’t change. You can expect to attend class at the same campus, practice in the same hands-on labs and learn from the same dedicated, experienced instructors. You will still receive an industry-aligned education and graduate career-ready!

What will change?

You’ll gain access to larger support services teams dedicated to helping students pursue their goals. This includes career services, financial aid, housing assistance and military and veteran services. The following changes will also occur:

  • Students will use Blackboard instead of Canvas.
  • You will receive a new student ID and email address.

Will this affect the length of my program?

Depending on when you began training and which courses you completed before the transition, your program may be shortened or extended. We will develop an individualized progress plan for you, and Support Services will meet with you to review and answer your questions.

If my program extends, how will this affect my housing?

Collegiate Housing Services is aware of the transition and is prepared to assist students who need to extend their lease.

Will my courses change?

The learning objectives will remain the same, but the courses required to graduate may vary by program. We will meet with each student to discuss this.

Will my course schedule change?

MIAT’s current course schedule will shift to mirror the one at UTI. UTI courses last three weeks, and students attend campus Monday through Friday for five hours each day. To start, we will offer one to two sessions depending on the program:

  • First session: 6:30 to 11:30 a.m. (one hour less per day)
  • Second session: Noon to 5 p.m. (one hour less per day)

What if UTI’s course model doesn’t work with my work schedule?

UTI’s Career Services department can assist you in looking for flexible, part-time work that won’t disrupt your studies.

Will the grading and attendance policy change?

Yes, UTI has a different attendance and grading policy than MIAT that you can review in the catalog.

Will I still receive a diploma?

Yes! The only difference is that your diploma will be issued by UTI instead of MIAT.

Will this affect my financial aid?

UTI’s Financial Aid team will contact you to set up an assessment where they review your current financial aid package to ensure that you are not negatively impacted through this transition.

Will my tuition change?

No, the transition will not affect your tuition cost. If your program is less expensive under UTI, your tuition may lower.

Will this affect my VA benefits or monthly housing allowance?

We do not expect students’ VA benefits or monthly housing allowance to be negatively impacted.

Will I still be able to request transcripts?

Yes! You will still be able to request your MIAT transcripts. UTI can also provide transcripts that reflect transfer credits for the courses completed at MIAT.

Will the dress code change?

MIAT and UTI have the same dress code standards. We will provide you with UTI shirts free of cost, but you can also continue wearing MIAT apparel.

Do I have other options to complete my program?

UTI has developed course transfer cross-walks to ensure all your completed coursework at MIAT is transferred to the comparable UTI program. However, you are not required to complete at UTI. MIAT will issue a full academic transcript at the conclusion of your program, and you may consider other institutions for transfer. Transferability of credits, as well as tuition and other costs, is at the discretion of that institution.

Where can I learn more about this transition?

We will host a Welcome to UTI event where you can gain more insight. Support Services will also contact each student individually. In the meantime, you can direct your questions to campus_support@uti.edu, and a member of our team will follow up with you.

Will I have to attend a different campus location?

No. You can still plan on attending classes at 533 Northpark Central Drive, Houston, TX 77073.

How does this affect me?

You will begin as an MIAT student, and if you choose to participate in the UTI teach-out, you will graduate from UTI. You will also gain access to more support services that enhance financial aid, career services, housing assistance and military and veteran benefits.

When will this affect me?

The transition will take place in these phases:

  • Industrial Maintenance, Robotics & Automation, Wind Power and HVACR will become UTI programs on May 13, 2024.
  • Airframe & Powerplant and Advanced Non-Destructive Testing will become UTI programs on October 28, 2024.

If you choose to remain through the program transition, you will be enrolled as a UTI student.

Will my course schedule change?

  • First session: 6:30 to 11:30 a.m. (one hour less per day)
  • Second session: Noon to 5 p.m. (one hour less per day)

Will program offerings stay the same?

Students who enrolled prior to 12/5/23 can complete an AAS degree program at MIAT Canton upon graduation from UTI Houston as part of the teach out plan. Please note that Robotics and Energy programs also have on-ground courses that require completion to meet program criteria. Those courses can only be completed at MIAT Canton after 5/13/2024. Aviation general education courses are online and can be completed remotely. Students who enroll 12/5/2023 or later must meet specific credit requirements to attend an AAS program at MIAT Canton. Please reach out to Student Services if you have questions.

Will there be a new location?

The location will not change. If you enroll in one of our programs, you will attend class at 533 Northpark Central Drive, Houston, Texas 77073.

If I enrolled, would the same support services be available to me?

Yes, plus more! The transition will grant MIAT students access to an even larger support services team that enhances education, financial aid, career services, housing assistance and military and veteran services.
