CANTON, MICHIGAN: More than 100 students from schools throughout Michigan, including the Upper Peninsula, will showcase the automotive knowledge and hands-on skills learned in the 2014/2015 school year at the MITES Auto Competition May 15, 2015. More than 40 instructors are registered to participate, bringing first and second year students.

The competition, in it\’s 21st year, is organized by Michigan Industrial and Technology Education Society (MITES), and will be held at MIAT College of Technology Main Campus, 2955 South Haggerty Road in Canton, Michigan.

MITES would like to thank Jack Demmer Automotive Group for providing the vehicles needed for the hands-on challenge stations. Jack Demmer, which operates Ford and Lincoln Dealerships, and Jack Demmer Collision Centers in Wayne and Dearborn, has agreed to support the competition with a dozen vehicles for the students to work with.

Awards are presented to first through tenth place winners in first-year and second-year divisions. Scholarships from colleges and technical educational institutions are offered to participants on-site. Total scholarship dollars in recent years have ranged from over $500,000 to as high as $753,000.

According to Larry Gaul, Assistant Director of Admissions for MIAT College of Technology, the competition is a great opportunity for students to demonstrate the ability to face technical challenges in their future workplace, using equipment commonly found in the automotive industry.

\”We set up the vehicles with the engine lights on, and the students use scanners and other tools to troubleshoot and diagnose the problems\”, said Gaul.

Students will be challenged at a variety of stations in the competition:

  • Math and Written Knowledge
  • Safety Inspections
  • Tool Identification
  • Parts Identification
  • Steering and Suspension
  • Brakes
  • Engine Performance, troubleshooting and diagnosis

Additionally, for those interested in advanced technology, MIAT will offer equipment tours during the competition, featuring jet engines, energy turbines, wind turbines, generators and other industrial training equipment housed on campus.

The competition will begin May 15 at 8:00 am on the MIAT College of Technology campus, with students completing stations until early afternoon, and the awards presentations taking place after scoring is compiled.
