MICHIGAN INSTITUTE OF AVIATION AND TECHNOLOGY (MIAT) ADDS DIVERSITY TRAINING FOR ALL PROGRAMS

Graduates from MIAT bring as many as 40 technical skills to their first day of work, but one of the most important skills they offer their new employer is the ability to work with others.

Successful completion of diversity training is now mandatory for all MIAT training programs: Aviation Maintenance/Airframe and Powerplant, Power Technology and Transportation Logistics/Dispatch.

The diversity training is part of the curriculum, and prepares students to comply with anti-harassment policies and race, gender, and cultural equality requirements in the classroom and on the job.

Upon course completion, students are awarded an Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO)–Respect and Anti-Harassment Certificate from HR On Demand, a human resource services organization that administers the training for MIAT.

According to MIAT President Charles Hawes, employer need led to the course requirement.

"This is one more advantage for the employer upon hiring our graduates. We train workers for careers that require human interaction on a global level. Travel is a major aspect of the Aviation Technology and Power Technology industries. Communication and situation management skills are a high priority for Transportation Dispatch positions", said Hawes.

"Employers want to spend less time and resources on new hire orientation...get them on the job and productive as soon as possible, so the diversity training is a great help", stated Hawes.
